Jayalaitha,

[ I do not want to address you ‘ Dear’ , as you were describing in your ‘appeal ‘ that people in Kerala have Psychosis . I am sure that you do not have sufficient education or intellectual capacity to understand the meaning of that word. I can explain the meaning of that word for you. Psychosis is a severely impaired state of mental functioning manifested by delusions [fixed false beliefs] and hallucinations [ hearing voices and seeing non existing things] . It is also described as the presentation of a very severe mental illness- Schizophrenia. Reading your appeal I seriously suspect that you are suffering from this. You have labelled all the people living in Kerala ‘Schizophrenics ‘and hence I don’t want to use any respectable words to address you]
Your descriptions about masonry gravity dams are being safe and resistant to natural calamities, giving examples of couple of dams standing in America and Britain is “insane” because; you as a chief minister should understand two major masonry gravity dam collapses in your nearby states . If you are not aware of this please ask Madras IIT which is very near to the place you live. They have conducted studies on this and I am attaching couple of incidents of dam failures from their report.

READ IT HERE
First one is a dam as old as Mullaperiyar which collapsed in 1961.
Khadakwasla Dam (Mutha, Maharashtra, India, 1864 – 1961)

The Khadkawasla Dam, near Pune in Maharashtra, India was constructed in 1879 as a masonry gravity dam, founded on hard rock. It had a height of 31.25 m above the river bed, with a 8.37 m depth of foundation. Its crest length was 1.471 m and had a free board of 2.74 m. The dam had a flood capacity of 2,775 m3/s and a reservoir of 2.78 * 103 m3. The failure of the dam occurred because of the breach that developed inPanshet Dam, upstream of the Khadkawasla reservoir. The upstream dam released a tremendous volume of water into the downstream reservoir at a time when the Khadkawasla reservoir was already full, with the gates discharging at near full capacity. This caused overtopping of the dam because inflow was much above the design flood. The entire length of the dam spilling 2.7 m of water. Vibration of the structure was reported, as the incoming flood was battering the dam. Failure occurred within four hours of the visiting flood waters.

Don’t you understand that one severe monsoon in Western Ghats could cause a flood like this ,which could result the collapse of the already weakened Mullaperiyaar dam . If your theory of gravity dams being un-collapsible how do you explain the collapse of 100 year old Khadakwasla Dam

Another example of similar incidence happened in your nearby state is given below.

Kaddam Project Dam, Andhra Pradesh, India

Built in Adilabad, Andhra in 1957 – 58, the dam was a composite structure, earth fill and/or rock fill and gravity dam. It was 30.78 m high and 3.28 m wide at its crest. The storage at full was 1.366 * 108 m3. The observed floods were 1.47 * 104 m3/s. The dam was overtopped by 46 cm of water above the crest, in spite of a free board allowance of 2.4 m that was provided, causing a major breach of 137.2 m wide that occurred on the left bank. Two more breaches developed on the right section of the dam. The dam failed in August 1958.

You proudly explained about the work done by your engineers, to strengthen Mullaperiyar dam with modern technology . When your Tamil Nadu engineers applied their modern technology to Kodaganar Dam in Tamil Nadu, the result was as shown below. If your technology did not prevent such a small dam collapsing in your on state in a small earthquake ,how do you make sure that the same technology will save 125 year old huge structure in Mullaperiyar ?

Kodaganar Dam, Tamil Nadu, India

This dam in the India, was constructed in 1977 on a tributary of Cauvery River as an earthen dam with regulators, with five vertical lift shutters each 3.05 m wide. The dam was 15.75 m high above the deepest foundation, having a 11.45 m of height above the river bed. The storage at full reservoir level was 12.3 million m3, while the flood capacity was 1275 m3/s. A 2.5 m free board above the maximum water level was provided. The dam failed due to overtopping by flood waters which flowed over the downstream slopes of the embankment and breached the dam along various reaches. There was an earthquake registered during the period of failure although the foundation was strong. The shutters were promptly operated during flood, but the staff could only partially lift the shutters, because of failure of power. Although a stand-by generator set was commissioned soon, this could not help and they resorted to manual operation of shutters,. In spite of all efforts water eventually overtopped the embankment. Water gushed over the rear slopes as a cascade of water was eroding the slopes. Breaches of length 20 m to 200 m were observed. It appeared as if the entire dam was overtopped and breached.

With the examples you have given internationally , you have proven the ignorance you have in this subject. I can help you there too Theodor Roosevelt dam was not a gravity dam and the work you are mentioning was not a modification, it was a reconstruction of the dam. It was completed in 1996 at a cost of $430 million. The $430 million in costs included three other major construction contracts associated with the dam.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theodore_Roosevelt_Dam.

As a result of the reconstruction, the dam has a completely altered appearance from when it was originally listed as a National Historic Landmark.

For the safety of people in Kerala and some parts of Tamil Nadu, why don’t you understand that this is what exactly we are demanding for .
Did you also know that The Upper Glendevon dam mentioned in your ‘appeal’ was made of concrete as a gravity dam and major concerns were existing from the beginning about the leaks and its ability to withstand earthquakes. Completed in 1955, the reservoir is retained by a concrete gravity dam, some 46m (150 feet) high. The dam has suffered from significant water-leakage problems which required restorative action in 1960, 1968 and again in 1975. In early 1990s a major reconstruction work was undertaken spending millions of pounds to make that dam safe enough by reconstruction? Again we are demanding for a similar kind of approach by reconstructing Mullaperiyar dam.

In your appeal , contradicting your earlier statements , you admit that the worst may happen –the Mullaperiyar dam may collapse. You also argue that Idukki dam will hold the water. What about the lives of 500,000 people living in between ?

Did you know that in 1975 Chinese government convinced the people with similar kind of argument that if Shimonten dam fails Banqiavo dam will hold the water and on the day when the first one collapsed both dams failed resulting in 250,000 deaths , loss of 500,000 buildings and permanent damage to 1000,000 people?

May I ask you few questions ?

1. Do you or your engineers have any idea about the actual amount of the water in Mullaperiyar reservoir ?

2. Is the Peak Dam Failure index calculated for this 125 year old dam calculated and if so what is it. That means ,If a heavy monsoon comes the pressure between incoming water and the out flow needed to be balanced and the increasing height of the dam will make it more prone to collapse . If you knew this , will you suggest this knowing that it will result in the death of 50 lakhs malayalees and 5 lachs Tamilians ?
Finally you said there is no valid reason to believe that Mullaperiyar dam is unsafe.

I would like to attract your attention to this
http://www.thehindu.com/news/states/kerala/article2694645.ece?css=print

The report published by the same news papers in which your appeal came says
“ The scanning of upstream side of the Mullaperiyar dam using a remote operated vehicle by the Central Soil and Materials Research Station on directions from the Empowered Committee of the Supreme Court had found serious damage to the masonry structure between 95 to 106 feet from the base of the dam, retired engineer M. Sasidharan who was observer of Kerala during the scanning said in a report to the government.

Apart from innumerable pot holes, crevices and other openings that were visible on the surface of the dam, the masonry cover provided at the upstream side of the dam was seen to have undergone a crushing between 106 feet and 95 feet throughout the entire length of the dam.

“The damage that the dam has undergone in between the above noted elevations is so severe that no amount of rectification can salvage the dam from a disaster. Even a medium nature of earth quake of four to five magnitudes (on the Richter scale) near the dam site can shake the already loosened masonry cover to a collapsible condition.”

The scan results projected deterioration at all 34 sections of the dam from massive erosion of lime surki mortar from the rubble joints; exposing huge voids, deep pot holes, wide open joints, deep crevices and hollowness on the upstream periphery of the dam. “On most of the sections at this area, rubble was seen in a loosened condition, suggesting that the dam has undergone an irreparable damage.” Mr. Sasidharan said that some of the damage was caused by mistakes in the strengthening works carried out by Tamil Nadu following recommendation of the Central Water Commission in 1979.

The dam had undergone a crushing on account of the additional load of nearly 21.75 tons per feet applied on the top of the dam in the form of RCC capping as part of emergency strengthening measure. The pre-stressing done by cable anchoring through the upstream masonry portion might have loosened and damaged the masonry. Mr. Sasidharan told The Hindu that when the original case over raising of water level was argued before the Supreme Court, Kerala had failed to present the argument that the dam was structurally weak.

What it had presented was applicable to many other dams. In court records, the Mullaperiyar dam was stated as a masonry dam whereas it was a composite dam. The inner core (62 per cent) of the dam was constructed with hydraulic lime surki mix and its upstream and downstream sides with rubble masonry.

He said that no present day engineer would dare even in his dream to design and construct a dam using hydraulic lime surki mix, in the manner of Mullperiyar dam, as this hydraulic lime surki mix is a very weak and unsound material, especially to withstand earthquake forces and high water pressure when compared to dams constructed with rubble or concrete materials.

This was the reason why no country in the world venture to construct a dam using hydraulic lime surki mixes, even though the material is available in plenty.’’

3. Are you prepared to bring an independent international dam safety agency [From Britain or America] to study the safety of this dam and reassure the people of Kerala and the border districts of Tamil Nadu ?
Now I request you to seriously re-consider your arguments and save the lives of 50 lakh people in Kerala . We are not against you taking water from Periyar reservoir for our Tamil brothers and sisters to drink , We are not against you producing electricity worth 330 Crores for our Tamil brothers and sisters to have improved quality of lives. We are appealing for our lives . Please try to understand that we did not protest for the last 125 years , and now because of the repeated earthquakes , about 10 lakhs people in Idukki and Kottayam districts do not sleep well , eat well and they see Mullapperyyar dam breaking in front of their eyes in every earthquake occurring near to this dam

If you are not prepared to consider these requests , I have an appeal to our Tamil brothers and sisters .

‘Please understand that your chief minister has a major psychotic illness , dominated by paranoid delusions against people in Kerala, and she is hearing voices of devil speaking to her asking her to kill 50 lakhs of people and she sees herself dancing over dead bodies. She needs treatment , shock treatment from you people to save our lives . Please….. .Please save us

French prophet Nostradamus who published collections of prophecies had predicted a dam disaster in South India ,likely to happen in July 2012. According to several British astrologers Mullaperyar –Idukki dam disaster, currently staring at the people in the state of Kerala is well predicted in Nostradamus’s well known work Les Propheties (The Prophecies), the first edition of which appeared in 1555.

On a consultations arranged by the editors of boolokamonline.net , several experts and the researchers pointed out that the original 1557 edition ran:

Ennosigée feu du centre de terre
Fera trembler au tour de cité neufve:
Deux grands rochiers long temps feront la guerre
Puis Arethusa rougira nouveau fleuve

This is an accurate description of what is likely to happen in the state of Kerala where 5 million people live , fearing for their lives due to the ‘water bomb’ in Mullaperiyar dam, which could ‘explode’ at any time . A reasonable English translation for the above prophecy appears as

Earthshaking fire from the centre of the Earth
Will cause tremors around the New City.
Two great rocks will war for a long time,
Then Arethusa will redden a new river.

In the western astrology, Venus represents female deity, and according to the experts this planet’s position will cause extensive natural disasters in South India including floods and earthquakes in Kerala’s monsoon season [June-July] .They advise that the prophecy is an accurate description of an earthquake destroying the Mullaperiyar dam as well as the emerging South Indian economic capital ,the city of Cochin. It says two great mountains will fight against the disaster for some time fruitlessly and a red river will be created by the goddess of water. According to the interpretation the two great mountains are claimed to be ‘ Kuravan’ and ‘ Kurathi ‘ mountains linked by Idukki dam and the collapse of that mega –dam will result in creation of a red river –reddened by the blood of 5 million people from five districts in Kerala.

Idukki District in Kerala where the dam is situated , is a well known area for repeated earthquakes. Safety concerns were raised by Kerala Government after several earthquakes, that resulted in leaks and cracks in the dam. A state agency, Centre for Earth Science Studies (CESS), Thiruvananthapuram, had reported that the structure would not withstand an earthquake above the magnitude of 6 on the Ritcher Scale .

Mullaperiyar Dam is a masonry gravity dam, on the Periyar river. It is located 881 m (2,890 ft) above mean sea level in Idukki District of Kerala ,India. It was constructed between 1887 and 1895 by the British Government to divert water eastwards to Madras Presidency area [Tamil Nadu]. It has a height of 53.6 m (176 ft) from the foundation and length of 365.7 m (1,200 ft). The dam is operated by the Government of Tamil Nadu based on a lease agreement entered into in 1886 by the British India Governmentand the Maharajah of Travancore. Control of the dam and the reservoir by Tamil Nadu, after Independence and after Reorganization of States, has been a matter
of dispute between the States of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The matter is currently pending before a Division Bench of the Supreme Court.

It’s official: Google’s answer to Facebook is finally here with the launch of Google+ Brand Profiles. Google has finally unveiled brand page for Google+, allowing businesses and brands to join Google’s social network. The feature has been long awaited and discussed, since Facebook has had Pages for businesses, organizations, and people for some time.

“we want to make sure you can build relationships with all the things you care about—from local businesses to global brands—so today we’re rolling out Google+ Pages worldwide.”, Google SVP of Social Vic Gundotra said in a blog post.

Google also announced “Direct Connect” from Google search. Google+ Pages will now be found in search results, allowing customers to connect directly to businesses.

Here is what Google had to say about Direct Connect:

People search on Google billions of times a day, and very often, they’re looking for businesses and brands. Today’s launch of Google+ Pages can help people transform their queries into meaningful connections, so we’re rolling out two ways to add pages to circles from Google search. The first is by including Google+ pages in search results, and the second is a new feature called Direct Connect.

Maybe you’re watching a movie trailer, or you just heard that your favorite band is coming to town. In both cases you want to connect with them right now, and Direct Connect makes it easy—even automatic. Just go to Google and search for [+], followed by the page you’re interested in (like +Angry Birds). We’ll take you to their Google+ page, and if you want, we’ll add them to your circles.

This gives huge advantage for Google, since it owns the majority of searches in the world by a huge margin. This gives the company a competitive advantage to provide companies direct access to consumers, in a way that Facebook can’t. There’s only one major problem with that: Google+ is not Facebook. Scrawl those four words on a Post-It and stick it on your monitor or iPad until you memorize them. That’s the first step toward mastering Google+ for marketing.

In a case of major security breach, suspected Pakistani cyberpunks hacked the official website of India’s largest telecom company, BSNL today. The hackers, claiming to be members of “Khantastic haXor”, said that, “Hey Admin: sorry, just logs and database deleted“.

I think BSNL not yet noticed about it. The hacker notice is still available there on the website. The same site was hacked Jul 27 and Aug 28 of this year. This shows that India’s lagest telecom operatoraters secuirity is in utter trouble. Now, this is really getting serious – Not only are Government websites getting continuously hacked, but user data is also getting compromised.

In the previous security breach on Jul 27th, the hackers have managed to get their hands on information of over 10,000 BSNL Users regarding their name, email, phone number and location & BSNL’s internal working of VPN ,detail of circuits and as well as more technical details.

Even after such repeat hack attacks, Indian government agencies are not able to secure their servers and websites. Less than some month back NIC website was hacked by Anonymous group and now BSNL is hacked by PCA.

Facebook said that its new feature, Timeline would be on the way for everyone sometime in the coming days, which is great and all, for everyone else. Fortunately, enabling Timeline a bit early isn’t too difficult — but it’s not at all straight forward, either.

That’s okay. We can make it happen.

You see, Facebook is enabling Timeline early for open graph developers. You, too, can be an open graph developer — even if you’re just looking to dabble.

Here’s how to enable it:

Log into Facebook

Enable developer mode, if you haven’t already. To do this, type “developer” into the Facebook search box, click the first result (it should be an app made by Facebook), and add the app.

Then goes to the developer app (if Facebook doesn’t put you there automatically, it should be in your left-hand tool bar)

Create a new app (don’t worry — you wont actually be submitting this for anyone else to see/use). Give your shiny new app any display name and namespace you see fit. Read through and agree to the Platform Privacy agreement. This is the step you need to be verified for.

Ensure you’re in your new app’s main settings screen. You should see your app’s name near the top of the page

Look for the “Open Graph” header, and click the “Get Started using open graph” link. Create a test action for your app, like “read” a “book”, or “eat” a “sandwich”

This should drop you into an action type configuration page. Change a few of the default settings (I changed the past tense of “read” to “redd” — again, only you can see this unless you try and submit your application to the public directory), and click through all three pages of settings

Wait 2-3 minutes

Go back to your Facebook homescreen. An invite to try Timeline should be waiting at the top of the page

And you’re done! We’ve seen this work quite a few times now, so it should work without a hitch for just about anyone.

Finally the happy news is here for all Indian web addicts, after placing restrictions on PayPal in India, it appears that the Reserve Bank of India has allowed PayPal to increase the receiving limit to $3000 per transaction; In March, it had placed a limit of $500 on transactions.

In order to comply with the RBI Guidelines, all PayPal users in India must:

Add a Permanent Account Number (PAN) and Purpose Code.

By adding this information, you will continue to receive export-related payments into your PayPal account and your account will not be limited from receiving future payments.

Add a bank account in India.

This will help us to auto withdraw your PayPal balance out of your PayPal account and transfer your balance to your bank account in India. Note: If you don’t add a bank account in India to your PayPal account then your PayPal account will also be limited from receiving export-related payments.

“Over the past few months, we have received feedback from our merchants in India and shared it with the RBI. We are thankful that the RBI has responded in a positive way and increased the transaction limit to better enable entrepreneurs and small and medium sized businesses to conduct cross-border trade. This is a huge step forward for PayPal and for Indian SMEs who can grow their export business through ecommerce by tapping our 100 million active users in 190 markets across the globe right from the US to the UK to Australia”, Mayur Patel, India Country Manager, PayPal said.

Shadowed by Steve Jobs, the tech world seems to have missed the death of Dennis Ritchie (1941-2011). It’s being reported that Dennis Ritchie, one of the greatest computer engineers of our times who created the C programming language (that got many of you your first ever programming job) and co-creator of UNIX died on October 8, 2011. Mr. Ritchie died after a long illness; the details are unknown yet.

Ritchie passed away on the weekend of October 8th, battling an unspecified illness. The news of the death of the 70-year-old was first broken on Google+ by Robert C. Pike , a Canadian software engineer and author, and a close friend.

Born in New York in 1941, Ritchie was from the generation of great minds that made its mark in corporate years of the 1960s, taking a Harvard degree in physics and applied mathematics to his first important job at Bell Labs in 1967.

Ritchie was a major influence the most famous thing ever to come out of that company, an operating system called Unix. First run up by colleague and fellow computing Ken Thompson in assembly language for DEC’s PDP-7 minicomputer, the pair later wrote the founding document of a software movement, edition one of the Unix Programmer’s Manual.

Armed with an operating system that was to change the computing world, Ritchie set about creating C, a programming language that could be used to make system and applications for Unix machines.

It would be flippant to say that the rest is history but at the time it certainly didn’t seem so certain to the modest Ritchie himself. Asked why he toiled so hard to create C and Unix, Ritchie reportedly replied that it “looked like a good thing to do.”

The C language was later used as the foundation of an object-oriented C++, which abounds in software to this day and of course Linux can be seen as a descendant of Ritchie’s pioneering brilliance.

Most of his career was spent at Bell Labs. Ritchie went on to be appointed head of the System Software Research Department at Bell Labs’ Computer Sciences Research Center, and received a Turing Award in 1983 and the US National Medal of Technology in 1998 along with Thompson for his work on C and Unix. RIP, Mr. Ritchie.

Steven Paul Jobs, the co-founder and chairman of Apple, the man who brought the world the Macintosh, the iPod, the iPhone and the iPad, died Wednesday at the age of 56 after a long and highly public battle with cancer.

Announcing his death, a statement from the company said Apple had lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world had lost an amazing human being.

Steve Jobs stepped down in January handing over to his chief operating officer Tim Cook who oversaw the launch of the latest iPhone earlier this week.

Born in America’s San Francisco in 1955, Jobs grew up near Cupertino, Calif. After attending Reed College in Portland for one semester, Jobs took a job at Atari, designing circuit boards. In 1976, Jobs co-founded Apple with Steve Wozniak.

The 2 young men started out with a few thousand dollars in cash and a vision of changing the world. Over the course of the past 35 years, the company and Jobs have gone on to change the world, the personal computing industry, the music and film industries and the mobile industry as we know.

Apple released its first mass-market product, the Apple II in 1976. The Apple II helped ignite what would become known as “the personal computer revolution” and thrust the charismatic Jobs into the spotlight. By the time IBM released its first PC in 1981 and Commodore released the Commodore 64 in 1982, Apple was already hard at work on the product that would cement Apple’s place in computing history, the Macintosh.

Jobs was forced out of Apple in 1985 over disagreements concerning vision, style and attitude. At the time, Jobs was written off by many in the business and industry press as a flash in the pan.

After leaving Apple in 1985, Jobs and some of his Apple founded NeXT with a cadre of Apple alumni. NeXT was well-financed and its software and hardware were top notch. Still, the products failed to make an impact on the industry.

Jobs’s real success in the first half of the 1990s wasn’t in the computer industry, but in the film industry. Pixar, a small animation studio Jobs acquired in 1986, went from obscurity to industry game-changer after the release of 1995?s Toy Story. It was Pixar, not Apple — and not NeXT — that made Jobs a very rich man.

In late 1996, Jobs approached Apple to discuss his former company acquiring NeXT. Apple needed an operating system, NeXT had one, NeXTSTEP.

Within a few months of rejoining Apple, Jobs took over as interim CEO. It was at this point that the modern Jobs legacy began to take shape.

From 1997 until August 2011, Jobs was Apple’s CEO, presiding over what can only be described as the greatest second and third acts in business history. Under his tutelage as CEO, Apple not only returned from the brink of bankruptcy to profitability, but products like the iMac, iPod, iPhone and iPad have single-handedly changed the consumer electronics and personal computing landscape.

Expose the bugs in security network and get rewarded over $500 for it too, says the social networking site, facebook which has already paid $40,000(over Rs 18 lakh) in the past three weeks to those who done it. Facebook has launched its ‘bug bounty‘ programme a few weeks ago, where it offered to pay for disclosure of security bugs to the company.

“A couple of years ago, we decided to formalise a ‘whitehat’ programme to encourage these researchers to look for bugs and report them to us … A few weeks ago, we took that programme to the next level — we started paying rewards to those who report bugs to us. The bug bounty programme was established as an effort to recognise and reward “these individuals for their good work and encourage others to join.”, Facebook chief security officer Joe Sullivan said on the official blog.

“The programme has already paid out more than $40,000 in only three weeks and one person has already received more than $7,000 for six different issues flagged. The programme has made the site more secure — by surfacing issues large and small, introducing Facebook to novel attack vectors, and helping it improve lots of corners in its code,” he added.

About 48 geeks have successfully identified problems and have been acknowledged on Facebook’s “whitehat” page. And more over Facebook pays about $ 500 for reporting such issues and increases the reward for specific bugs, the facebook blog said.
